Bjoerling died of a heart attack in September 1960, age I think 49. The recording DOES sound recent--classical recordings were at their peak from about 1958 to 1972, and recordings from that great period often sound better than things recorded more recently.

Yes. Actually I am working wardrobe right now for San Francisco Opera prod. of Turandot. Glorious Music! Domingo is a favorite..I worked "Cyrano" that he sang here last season. Still going pretty strong at his age, too. Very nice man, too.

THe aria name is correct "Nessun Dorma" (None shall sleep from Puccini's opera Turandot). I thought at first the tenor was Placido Domingo then changed my mind to Jussi Bjorling although the recording sounded quite recent. I think Jussi Bjorling died around the end of the 1950's although it could have been earlier.

Thanks for correction. Guess I had "NORMA" on the brain.

and sorry to correct you, but the title of the aria is "Nessun Dorma", not Norma.

The tenor's name is Jussi Bjoerling (sometimes spelled Bjorling). Great Swedish tenor of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. This is from a complete recording made by RCA records. It is still available. Birgit Nilsson, Renata Tebaldi, Bjoerling conducted by Erich Leinsdorf.

"Nessun Norma" from Puccini's TURANDOT. Not sure the tenor's name.
