To follow up Gappy's comment: The fake tan, believe it or not, is necessary for competition purposes. On stage, the very bright lights wash out most of the color. If you are anything other than VERY dark, all the muscle definition these guys try to develop ALSO washes out, putting them at a competitive disadvantage (and, counterintuitively, giving a false idea of what they've actually achieved.)
