Dave Draper was the muscle icon of my generation, preceding Arnold. I don’t recall how old I was when I first saw him on a rerun of ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’, but I was awestruck. Nothing had prepared me for such development. Somehow, I sensed I should keep my fascination secret. I started reading comics about that same time and was transfixed by the occasional Weider ads that showcased him and his tremendous biceps. When I later progressed to perusing muscle mags as a young teen, I heard about a movie called ‘Don’t Make Waves’, set in Muscle Beach and starring Draper, but it was years before it showed up on a local station.
This was long before video, and our glimpses of muscle on TV were quite limited – a handful of pro wrestlers, a few movie ‘Tarzans’, some classic flexes on old sitcoms, and the very rare contest on ‘Wide World of Sports’. More so than ‘Muscle Beach Party’, ‘Don’t Make Waves’ was deemed the ultimate muscle flick (‘Hercules’ movies were rarely televised in my area). I was fortunately home alone when the movie finally did air, but it’s a decidedly lame ‘comedy’ and a chore to sit through. The two female stars, Claudia Cardinale and Sharon Tate were gorgeous, but Draper steals the show and his brief scenes were memorable, to say the least. I can attest that several scenes lingered in my mind afterward.
This is a compilation of nearly ALL the film’s muscle footage. In addition to Draper, we get a darkly handsome Reg Lewis rocking a goatee and a particularly scrumptious crewcut Chet Yorton looking like your jock crush beefed up to perfection (his “No sweat, lady” still gets me hot). Draper himself is a towheaded, golden beach god, well-armed and massive for his time, a shark-tooth necklace drawing your eye to his luscious tits. All three studs are clad in denim cutoffs, arguably the sexist thing a hot man can wear.
Seeing this flick was a formative experience for muscle aficionados of my era, when 'inspiration' was otherwise hard to find. I always wanted to have the ‘best bits’ all together, so here they are. If it’s ‘up your alley’, pick your favorite part, slo-mo it, and enjoy.
