In the late 70s, on the heels of ‘Pumping Iron’ and amid the media’s discovery of Arnold (and bodybuilding in general), musclemen became a recurring novelty on TV, and they began showing up randomly on many of the trashy shows of the day.
The old ‘Addams Family’ had assumed legendary status by then, as its reruns were not shown in our area, but, in the fall of 1977, TV listings promised an Addams Halloween special. As a devotee of Universal monster flicks and ‘Young Frankenstein’ I was looking forward to a fun hour of atmospheric, macabre humor. I was quickly disabused of that notion, once the shown began in full, garish color and progressed with lame ‘jokes’ and lame ‘plotting’ so typical of the worst of 70s sitcoms.
If I had anything better to do, I’d have switched it off, but I continued watching it halfheartedly. Suddenly, these two muscle studs appeared on screen, and another interest of mine rose to the fore. Fortunately, I was alone in my room, with the door closed, so I could take matters in hand. I knew both guys from previous study of the mags of the era – Dave Johns, the then current Mr. America, and Clint Beyerle, a former Mr. USA. As you can see here, they were thick & full, attractively off-season. This was long before VCRs, so I could only preserve the spectacle in my mind. I never dreamt back then that we’d be able to enjoy such a seemingly fleeting pleasure so long afterward as now.
As is nearly always the case with similar muscular interludes in mass media, the scenes are almost unbearably stupid, so I would counsel muting the nonsense and relishing these delicious bodies for the masculine delights they present.
