In order to enjoy muscle in movies or TV, we are typically forced to endure some awful dreck to get the ‘fix’ we crave. ‘Sextette’ is a prime example. This dire sex-farce from 1977 starred an 83 year old Mae West in her final film and it’s a painful watch. Fortunately, midway through it, she crosses paths with the ‘U.S. athletic team’, which is comprised of several hot muscle guys of the era. Of course, for years, she had a longtime nightclub act featuring bodybuilders as chorus boys.
As I had ‘studied’ the mags for years prior to finally catching this on cable, I instantly recognized most of the musclemen immediately - Ric Drasin (pressing a barbell); Roger Callard {javelin guy}; Dave Dupre (black guy posing in left foreground); Reg Lewis (older guy in right foreground, bouncing pecs & posing); Kal Szalak (big guy posing on blue riser); Jim Morris (black guy in tank top introducing their ‘mascot’); and Denny Gable (big guy in blue shorts behind Callard during song, sans his usual mustache). IMDB lists two other guys who also seem to have been bodybuilders then but whom I didn’t know – Jim Tarleton and Brian Abadie.
Sadly, I couldn’t find any better resolution of this scene, but it’s still a treat for muscle aficionados, especially those partial to the physiques I grew up with. Watch it with sound the first go-round to get the full kitsch experience, then mute it going forward. There are enough tasty guys to satisfy any taste here.
