Growing up in the 70s was cool in so many ways. When not in school, we played outside, weather permitting, and during the summer, you were largely on your own, free to enjoy the day as you wanted, as long as you got home when expected. At night, you’d likely watch TV with your family, but options were limited – the three networks and maybe an independent station or UHF channel if you were lucky. People often remember the classic programs of the time, but those of us who lived it can attest to ho much garbage we sat through.
That era marked the last gasp of ‘variety shows’, typically hour-long extravaganzas mixing comedy sketches with strained musical numbers. There were some classic moments for sure (see some ‘Carol Burnett Show’ clips online, for example), but much was cringe-inducing even then. I recall seeing this travesty when it first aired in 1975, sitting in the living room with my parents, simultaneously thrilled and mortified when the bodybuilders appeared on-screen and commenced flexing. This was a sight I yearned to watch and relish but NOT in the presence of my parents! Feigning disinterest, I afterward excused myself to get a drink of water, just to remove myself from the scene.
As this predated any concept of VCRs, etc., as much as I yearned to watch it again (alone), I held no hope of doing so. Decades later, the miracle of the internet has made such wishes come true. The first stud on screen is Ric Drasin, followed by Don Peters (my personal favorite), Jim Morris, and finally Bill Grant (showing the best physique of the four). Play it through once for the whole kitsch experience, then mute and savor it at length for the hot muscle men.
