The very next year, there was another, even more controversial Mr. Olympia. Franco Columbu won, totally undeservedly, as he had absolutely no lower body. But he was Arnold's friend and had been in Arnold's shadow for years, so he won. Tom Platz (3rd) was in the greatest condition of his life and completely deserved to win. Again, booing, and again, it was not shown on TV (in fact, it is almost impossible to find any video of the 1981 Olympia, except for one amateur video).
Arnold was definitely not in anythng like his best shape, and Mentzer should have won. Mentzer, however, was very much the individualist, and it is doubtful if he would have been an easy man for the Weider organization to handle. Mike was absolutely incredible in his prime - and an interesting person.
It's amazing that there weren't as many Negro bodybuilders back then. Now the stage is covered with colored athletes, and it is rare for a Caucasian to make the top five.

12 years agoI too jacked off to Mike and his bro Ray. They were a couple of real men and I was shocked when they died.
