Sometime in 1975, following in the footsteps of countless good-looking guys seeking fame & fortune in LA, Arnold Schwarzenegger--already a successful bb, but still struggling to make it in the movies--found his way to the AMG studio, Bob Mizer's legendary compound at 1836 West 11th Street. He's seen here by the pool (with some other unidentified young visitor) the day he posed for Bob, displaying the same "cheerful, good-humored and exuberant" personality remembered by all who knew him as a schoolboy back in his native Austria. I'd never seen this wonderful shot until yesterday, but years ago I came across some b & w footage of him running wild through the nearby hills, clowning around with 'Billy'--the goat who was part of Bob's extensive personal menagerie. Judging from the surviving images, he seems to have kept his trunks on for both the still-photo & movie sessions, nimbly avoiding exposure in the altogether--or even the proficient coverage of a posing strap. While it's impossible to say whether this brief (and all but forgotten)collaboration with one of the Golden Age potentates of physique photography actually advanced Arnold's Hollywood ambitions, it should be noted that only two years later (after starring in 'Pumping Iron') he was already well on his way to becoming a household name.
