One of the fun aspects of discovering muscle in the 70s was how the era’s magazines educated us on the history of bodybuilding. Many ran periodic contest retrospectives or spotlights on competitors of years past, but nearly every issue featured numerous shots of prior champs in random articles or in ads. I vividly recall the first time I ever saw Don Howorth - a small b&w pic nestled in a Vince Gironda ad near the back of an ‘Iron Man Magazine’, the second muscle mag I ever bought.
Enlarged, it’s the very first image in the slide-show that starts this vid, so you can see why it sent a horny young muscle fan swooning. The spectacle of such godlike proportions filling out a simple tank top remains a thrill to behold. Just imagine encountering a specimen like this in public today. His physique was reminiscent of Reeves or Zane, but beefier, with big arms and the widest, thickest shoulders of the classic era. This, coupled with manly good looks and great hair styled in an attractive pompadour, made for quite the sexy package.
He had actually left the scene about ten years previous, soon after winning the IFBB America over Zane, etc. Around that time, he shot this brief walk-on scene for the then-popular ‘Wild, Wild West’, sort of a proto-steampunk western adventure series. Although I used to watch reruns of the show periodically, I missed seeing this scene until the advent of the ‘net made it easy to find muscle online.
He’s absolutely delicious here, handsome, tanned and thick, rocking a pink(!) tank top of all things in the Old West. Feel free to reimagine meeting him in this get-up in front of your favorite local bathhouse (or other watering hole).
