A fun aspect of being a kid in the 70s was that local theaters still ran Saturday matinee programs. You’d get dropped off with a couple of friends and some refreshment money and then enjoy a movie or two, along with maybe a cartoon and a brief nature short. Disney programmed most of these, predominantly centered on light comedies, such as ‘The Love Bug’ series, and my friends and I caught most of them.
I somehow missed out on seeing ‘The Strongest Man in the World’, one of a group of films starring a young Kurt Russell, set at a small college. A couple of years later, it showed up on TV, likely as part of ‘The Wonderful World of Disney’ which aired Sundays on NBC, as I recall watching it with my parents after dinner. It was a typical, silly melodrama, involving a super-strength formula concocted in a college lab. The final act featured a weightlifting contest pitting the small college’s team against the dominant ‘State’ champions. And that’s where it became memorable.
I was in my early teens by this point, already burdened with a lust for muscle. The previous year, I had worked up the courage to gradually and secretly buy a handful of muscle mags, and I had been avidly poring over them ever since. So, I was enthused to see the introduction of the ‘State’ lifters, all tanned and thickly muscled, even as I struggled to seem nonchalant amid my family.
Then, suddenly, there was a golden god on screen, one of the hottest men I’d ever seen, his gorgeous muscles bulging as the camera zoomed on his awesome upper body, especially, his wide, sleek chest that seemingly filled our TV room. Thanks to my devoted ‘studies’, I instantly recognized him as Roger Callard, over whom my eyes had lingered many times in one of the mags I had bought, His appearance was brief, and I kept my cool around the family, but you can bet I took his image to bed with me that night and many thereafter. The first part of this video entails basically all the footage we got of Roger and his muscular teammates in the film. (I believe the thick lifter at the end is Steve Merjanian, who also appeared in ‘Muscle Beach Party’)
There were a handful of 70s bodybuilders who exemplified the era, topping off their majestic physiques with the shaggy coifs, elongated sideburns and facial hair that were then in fashion. As with the ‘normal’ populace, some carried it off better than others. Roger, already particularly handsome, was immediately recognizable with his prominent mustache, which added a rakish air to a face that was the epitome of the studly college jock, which is what he was before beefing up into the bodybuilder who captured so many hearts.
Though he never won any major titles, he did have some success in Hollywood, starting with a small part in ‘Stay Hungry’ and later having pivotal roles in episodes of ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’, among with some later movie work.
The second clip comes from an ill-fated ‘77/’78 revival of the old ‘Laugh-In’ show. The whole thing’s a painful watch today, but I saw it back in the day, and Roger’s bit was one of the few highlights even then (at least for me).
Next, we have a clip from an early 80s movie called ‘The Beach Girls’. Perfectly cast as the sexy musclegod we all yearn to meet at the beach, this was apparently Roger’s only scene, but it nicely showcases his good looks and stunning upper body. In these days of graffitied bodies, his perfect, pristine skin is a pleasure to see.
I have a strong preference for muscle displayed under the sun, so I was delighted to find the following hilltop posing footage, as brief as it is, especially savoring the closeup on his prodigious pecs and his big flexed arm.
The next clip of studio posing might well derive from another ‘Laugh-In’ shoot, but as it was different, it seemed worthy of inclusion, as any quality footage of this scrumptious man is.
We finish up with some nude footage Roger shot under a pseudonym. I wasn’t hip to male porn until the advent of the ‘net, having disdained it early on, as the guys weren’t muscular enough for my tastes. Of course, this kind of stuff was done under the radar, so if you depended on the muscle mags for info on the guys you lusted after as I was, you’d be unaware of such ‘moonlighting’. Needless to say, my belated discovery of heretofore unknown treasures like this were always welcome treats when I did finally cum across them online.
