In the early 80s, ABC aired their own version of ‘Saturday Night Live’, calling it ‘Fridays’, and running it on that night. Michael Richards, of later ‘Seinfeld’ fame, was a featured player with a Krameresque recurring character called ‘Dick’ (Larry David was also onboard, seen here as the guy with the football). The show wasn’t very good, though my friends and I would occasionally watch it for the week’s musical guest. Luckily, I did happen to catch the first sketch here ‘live’ and the muscle walk-on we get halfway through made it worthwhile and memorable.
Just a month or so earlier, ‘Sports Illustrated’ had made me VERY happy by discovering/featuring the Barbarian Brothers essentially out of the blue, running a generous story on them with tasty pics, especially a two-page spread that nicely showcased their beefy upper bodies in fantasy-arousing Conan gear. (Away at college then, and sharing a house with other guys, I didn’t have access to muscle mags per se and had to ‘make do’ with what ‘inspiration’ I could find mainstream media). When one of those juicy meatheads suddenly showed up in the beach sketch (@ 4:00), I don’t know how I stopped myself from gasping in delight. I kept my cool in front of my flatmates, but I took the vision of those huge, mighty lats to bed with me that night and for as long as I could sustain the memory.
The second sketch, set in a gym, is even more satisfying, as we get muscle eye-candy throughout, including seemingly a return visit by the Barbarian Brother. Sadly, I couldn’t find a version with better image quality than this, but there’s enough clarity to appreciate the generous amount of muscle on display. The hot guy posing in the mirror (while somehow keeping a straight face) is the highlight for me. I missed seeing this back in the day, only happening upon it online when searching for the earlier beach sketch, so I don’t know how I would have coped if I’d seen all that tasty beef amid a crowd.
